Hungary For a Good Time? How To Spend a Day In Budapest
As we set out on our journey to Budapest, a sense of calm filled the air, mingled with a unique suspense. This marked the beginning for us in many ways: our first trip abroad under our company name, Chalk and Cheese Travels, and our first cruise. A rare occurrence, but I have concluded that there are just cities that ooze class, need no introduction and have an identity so unique that it hits like a prime Mike Tyson; this to me is Budapest.
Our trip started in the most spectacular Airbnb that left no screw unturned, featuring a Jacuzzi in the centre of the room accompanied by a 50-inch plasma; while undeniably difficult to leave we had to start the trip right; on a high. This meant two things – great food and a top bar.
The night kicked off with a traditional goulash at a restaurant at ‘Gettó Gulyas’, accompanied by a beer that has lingered on the tip of my tongue for over a decade (since my interrailing days): a pint of Dreher. At just 6500 FNT (15 euros) each, we were set for the night ahead, ready to explore the watering holes to which our thirsts could be quenched.
The highlight of the evening was an underground cocktail bar nestled in the heart of Budapest’s bustling city centre on a Saturday night. The enigmatic ‘Hotsy Totsy’ might puzzle you at first glance, but the name fades in significance when you step foot into this hidden speakeasy. A place so timeless that if you told me Frank Sinatra himself once graced its floors, I would have believed you.
The manager Adam Szondi held the fort in a tight run ship yet was gracious enough to pick out the best cocktails and try out a few local shots with us (Palinka). If not already unique enough and to add to its charm, the cocktail menu was cleverly presented on a deck of cards. In an instant the bartenders effortlessly transformed into magicians, using the cards to guide patrons towards their ideal drink choices based on their responses.
A brisk walk through the city centre towards our hotel that called for a few interviews with the locals about their favourite places in Budapest (see below) and we were gone into the night searching for the dirtiest kebab imaginable.
The next morning greeted us with throbbing heads and rumbling stomachs, demanding nourishment post-last night’s indulgence. A local produce fry-up in a sandwich, akin to a poor man’s beef wellington, was in order, followed by a rejuvenating session in the private sauna that hit the spot like nothing else could.

Marvel in its Beauty: The Travelmarvel Delightful Danube River Cruise (Budapest to Nuremburg)
Book yourself on a memorable 9-day trip with a 7 day cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg with Travelmarvel, where you’ll experience cities like Budapest and Vienna. Explore Budapest’s iconic sights like the Great Synagogue and Castle Garden Bazaar before setting sail towards Vienna, where you’ll experience architecture such as St Stephen’s Cathedral and Hofburg Palace. Enjoy optional trips to places like Schönbrunn Palace or Bratislava’s Old Town for an in depth cultural adventure.
Throughout the cruise, visit beautiful towns like Dürnstein and Melk with opportunities for guided tours and experiences. Arrive in Nuremberg and immerse yourself in its historical charm with a city tour, including stops at the Zeppelin Field and Palace of Justice. Finish your journey with a night at Le Meridien Grand Hotel Nuremberg, before heading back home via Munich Airport.
Moving swiftly on from the promo package, Paul and I were astounded by the beauty of the ship, the helpfulness of the staff, and the overall culture that the trip provided for all members on board. For two men who have never slept on a boat before, never mind a river cruise; this was truly a sight to behold.
Every morning on the Travelmarvel Capella (TMC for the future notation in this article), you awoke to the most amazing breakfast spread that included your traditional continental options but also the big boys – eggs, bacon, sausage; the works as the Yanks might say. Every meal moving forward was just exceptional – lunch was in the same format, a buffet style, but every day there was something new (bolognese, pork chops, salmon). However, the dinner layout was a bit more special as it was fine dining, which admittedly was daunting at first, but the two of us truly grew to love the five-course culinary experience. Alcohol also came as part of the package during meal times which consisted of top-of-the-range wines and beers; or if not one that enjoys the booze like Paul, there were soft drink options available.
Throughout the journey, Paul and I remained delighted with our room, which was vibrant yet compact, with the space expertly crafted so no area was wasted and everything felt comfortable at all times. I also believe that if you sneezed and left your room, the cleaners would have that in tip-top shape before you were able to grab a tissue. In other words, they were on hand and extremely good at their jobs.
The other amenities on board were a state-of-the-art lounge/bar that provided incredible views of the cities we were travelling through, an upper deck jacuzzi, the only Irish bar aboard any European river cruise known as ‘McGearys’ pub; and if you were feeling a little frisky (or guilty), there was a small gym on board which had all the essentials for weightlifting and cardio.
As I previously mentioned, the culture was truly striking on the TMC and that was largely due to the attention that was given to the entertainment portion, which was catered by the wonderful musical duo, Reece and Beth. I, for my sins, even joined in for a night and played a few songs in McGeary’s bar.
Finally, a host of themed nights set the tone for the trip; our favourite was the Bavarian night which consisted of traditional dancers/ musicians dressed to the nines in their Lederhosen, Bavarian food and to my delight a wide variety of German beers.
The TMC is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any age group, giving the guests on board the chance to see cities they may never have encountered, stay and eat in a setting that would be extremely difficult to recreate and to enjoy the amenities and entertainment that was second to none. Don’t just take it from me, as a picture (or video) paints a thousand words. Watch below to see our experience as I don’t think my article could give the same level of justice.
