Too Hot to Handle? ‘Hotsy Totsy’-Hidden Gem #1

Published

on

If you’re looking for an exciting bar during your time in Budapest, look no further. This hidden gem is perfect for groups, parties, dates, or even a quiet drink by yourself. The underground cocktail bar is nestled in the heart of Budapest’s bustling city centre but is so unique that it separates you from both the bar and the city, even transporting you back in time.

The enigmatic ‘Hotsy Totsy’ might puzzle you at first glance, but the name fades in significance when you step foot into this hidden speakeasy. A place so timeless that if you told me Frank Sinatra himself once graced its floors, I would have believed you.

On both nights we were there, the manager Adam Szondi held the fort in a tightly run ship yet was gracious enough to pick out the best cocktails and try out a few local shots with us (Palinka). If it’s not already unique enough and to add to its charm, the cocktail menu is cleverly presented on a deck of cards. In an instant, the bartenders effortlessly transform into magicians, using the cards to guide patrons towards their ideal drink choices based on their responses.

The cocktail list is extensive, and if you would like to check out their full list click here. Some of our staff’s favourites are the ‘Russian Spring Punch’ (Grey Goose, Joseph Carton Cassis, Raspberry, De Stefani, Lemon, Sugar), ‘Jungle Bird’ (Bacardi Quattro, Campari, Pineapple, Lime, Demerara), and my personal favourite is the ‘Paper Plane’ (Bulleit bourbon, Amaro Nonino, Aperol, Lime).

While the prices vary, from approximately 4000-5000 (11-13 euros), the detail and love put into every cocktail is truly remarkable and makes the price worth it.

For a hidden gem abroad, this truly takes the cocktail cake, and we at ‘Chalk and Cheese’ give it a rating of 9/10 on the HG (Hidden Gem) scale.
